1. Submit your website to search engines
Most people use search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN to find what they are looking for. Thus the first step to get your website publicised should be to submit it to those and maybe other search engines that you know your potential visitors/clients might use. Some of the search engines require only that the URL is registered. Other, like Yahoo, want you to determine how you want your site to be categorised and by which keywords you want to be identified. Different search engines might have different set of rules. Make sure that you read their FAQ to find out the details. Since we don't own search engines we can't be sure how long it takes for the results to show. Personally I have never heard of any competent SEO expert that gives a  time guarantee of any kind. In my opinion the best option is to focus on good content and natural links to start with.

2. Inform other Indexes about your website
There are several sites out there that keep updated lists of what's new on the web. An example is Yahoo! Directory What's New. Unlike the search engines those indexes review and evaluate your website before adding it to the list. That's why there is more prestige in being listed there. Do some reasearch to find the indexes that are appropriate for you to be seen on.

3. Organisations and Newsgroups
There is no point in trying to reach general audiences unless that is your pre-defined target group, but in my opinion that's doomed beforehand.  Just as an example if you are in travel business and you are specialised in selling travels to Austria then try to find organisations with connections to Austria. There are plenty of different groups and associations connecting your own country or maybe even your local area to Austria. Those could be associations for ex-patriots or Johann Strauss lovers. Those people are probably your potential clients. When approaching Newsgroups make sure that you leave the information about your website in an appropriate section. Don't try to make it a free advertisment place. That's not ethical and you might find yourself barred.

4. Traditional Advertising, Marketing and PR
Those promotional tools can still be very effective but they don't come cheap. Would your budget allow this kind of investment make sure that you target your audience and don't forget to include your website name and URL in the printed materials. Online marketing is another option. The costs are calculated based on how highly targeted the audience is. What you pay for is the number of impressions i.e. the number of times your ad is actually seen. Pay per click (PPC) is an established form of advertising online and means that you buy sponsored keywords with search engines. A sponsored link to your website appears then as part of the search results. PPC are quite cost effective as you normally pay when the visitor actually clicks on your link.

5. The Value of Links
Even if many don't think this is the way to go, I wouldn't underestimate this technique. In my opinion the most important part is that the websites you link to are naturally related to your website.
